This year, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2024 was held from 3 to 6 October. Held annually since 2001 (with the exception of 2020), the Championship is organised by Alfred Dunhill Limited. It is contested over three courses: the Old Course in St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links, and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The final round of the championship takes place on the “home of golf,” the Old Course.

Dunhill runs two competitions concurrently at the championship: the DP World Tour-sanctioned individual professional tournament and the team championship, where pros are paired up with amateurs.

After the 54-hole cut, 168 professionals are whittled down to sixty, and in the team sections, 80 pairs become twenty. In the final round, only three professionals and three teams remain.

The team championship garners significant publicity each year, as professional players are partnered with celebrity amateurs. This year, the cast of celebrities featured in the Dunhill Championship included actors such as Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia, Bill Murray, and Kathryn Newton; sportsmen Gareth Bale and Rory McIlroy; and British television presenter Piers Morgan.

The demand brought by the championship is significant to hotels and restaurants in St Andrews. When asked about the importance of the event to hotels, Seamus Coen, General Manager at the Rusacks St Andrews, said: “The Dunhill Links Championship is one of the busiest weeks of the year for the Rusacks … our restaurants are full most nights, and we host an annual event for Dunhill during the week”.

Tyrrell Hatton won the championship for a third time, with a score of 264 points. In the team event, Irish businessman and financier Dermot Desmond, and his professional partner Thorbjorn Olesen came out on top. This is Desmond’s second time winning the team competition.

The championship boasts an impressive roster of sponsors. Its partners include timepiece retailers IWC Schaffhausen and Watchfinder & Co., sportswear outlets Peter Millar and G/Fore, and rifle manufacturer Purdey.

The prize purse this year sat at a total of $5,000,000. Whilst $4,800,000 of this prize pool went towards the professional tournament, the remaining $200,000 was allocated to the team championship. First prizes for the professional and team championships are $816,000 and $50,000 respectively.

With beautiful scenery and rich history, St Andrews is a place well suited to accommodate events like this.
