Sunday I'm in Love (Final Special)

Your weekly Sunday League round-up

The twenty or so hardy souls who braved the pissing rain might have agreed with George Livanos’ assessment on the Sunday League Final Facebook event that it was “by far the s***test thing I’ve been invited to in my four years here.”

Butts Wynderers secured their place in the top flight next season after seeing off DLL in the relegation play-off. After a controversial late equaliser from DLL, the game went to penalties. It’s been a tough season for the Wynderers, but they delivered under the lights when it mattered.

“We had a lot of new players this year, but I definitely think we started gelling in the second half of the season,” Wynderers captain Oumar Sagna said. “We’re going to fight next season, and I definitely think we can do big things.”

Denys Zhurov fired the game into life inside ten minutes with an absolute screamer from the edge of the box. Strokers hit back on the half-hour, a clinical finish from top-scorer James Taylor levelling things up.

Two goals either side of the break put Spartans firmly in control, and they had one hand on the trophy when Victor Bootz put them 4-1 up entering the final twenty minutes. Spartans’ experience showed with their game management, and they added a fifth to seal the deal.

“It means a lot to the boys,” Spartans captain Avik Sanyal said. “We lost to Strokers in the opening game. It was nice to get our revenge in the final.”
