Sunday I'm in Love

Your weekly Sunday League round-up

ree

It was very much squeaky bum time heading into the penultimate weekend of the Sunday League season, with the top four jostling for a spot in the Week 11 final and the bottom half fighting to avoid the drop.

Strokers shook off their early Welly-Ball-induced hangovers in style, coming from down 2–0 to cruise past strugglers Sheffield Tuesday in the early kick-off. Three wins on the spin have knocked Beavers off the top spot and installed Strokers as title favourites heading into the final weekend.

Spartans have timed their run after a sluggish start to the season, toppling the league leaders. A win against Division 1 whipping boys Bolton Fondlers should be enough to seal their place in the final.

Botswana Meat Commission remain firmly in the conversation after a ruthless 8–0 demolition of Butts Wynderers. Goal difference could yet prove crucial, and that result might be decisive come close of play next Sunday. As for the Wynderers, they travel to Sheffield Tuesday knowing only a win will secure their place in Division One next season.

Fondlers’ second no-show of the season has all but confirmed their relegation. Much like Engelbert Humperdinck at Eurovision 2012, their only target now is avoiding the dreaded nil points and a place in the history books.

Down in Division Two, it’s all eyes on Real Sosobad versus DLL in a winner-takes-all battle for automatic promotion. The loser will face either Butts Wynderers or Sheffield Tuesday in a play-off for a place at the top table of St Andrews football in the new year.

The Saint will be across all the big games next weekend with Patrick Maitland and Gregor Murray — our in-house Chris Kamara and Alan McInally — on hand to bring you all the drama as it unfolds.
