Saint Dates: "He talked about his ex. I can't compete with that"

An Interview with the Couple

MADDY

  • How did you prepare for the date?

Nothing really exciting. I was planning on not telling anyone, then told all my friends. Potluck hockey dinner the night before and they were all joking about saying they’d turn up in disguise. On the night, I had a glass of red wine and Facetimed my dad. He asked me where I was going all dressed up – I lied saying drinks with a friend. Then I almost had a panic attack that the hockey girls would show up.

  • What were you hoping for out of the date?

A new experience. Something different I guess– everyone I've been on a date with before has been someone I know really well. Turns out we knew each other – not really good friends but would say hi on the street. I think he knew it was me, so I'm happy he still turned up in the evening.

  • What was your first impression of Aaron?

I knew him already. I thought “wow he’s very familiar”

We’re both very similar, very extroverted, we talked for hours. LOVE to socialise.

  • What did you talk about?

Literally everything. We have so many mutual friends, obviously a little bit of medicine, got slightly competitive about our work experience. I’d got to see an open-heart surgery and he got to see a repair of the eye with a skin graft. I was like that’s unbelievable. Chatted a lot to the bartender – he told us we’d won in terms of best Blind Date because we’d stayed the longest. He then gave us another free drink which was so nice.

He talked about his ex and how she made a really good Bolognese . I mean I can’t compete with that.

We talked about parents and family – got the whole life story

  • Did you go anywhere after BrewCo?

His friend was playing in the jazz band at the Union, so we went there. We’d found £2 on the floor in Brewco and that got us our entry to the Union. I thought “wow, this is fate”. After that, he walked me home.

  • What moment did you feel the most connection?

I think when we talked about our personal attributes – we both love making new friends, are super positive and have the same outlook on life. We both have friends who are in a relationship and we each get compared to them. Such a positive person.

  • What was the most awkward moment?

Most definitely when I walked in. Knowing the person made it slightly more awkward. He was there when I arrived. He had an inkling it was me, but I went to the bar to make sure it was him. He pointed to the boy right next to the bar. That was a bit awkward

His roommate arrived at BrewCo halfway through the date.

  • Rate the date out of 10

We discussed doing something medical – like bones in the body. We decided we’d give each other a shot/drink. 10 (Tequila)

I already have his snapchat – we’ve been to a birthday party together. We’d smashed birthday cake in her face – a true mutual connection.

  • Would you see them again?

Yes – it was so much fun. It was five hours, so I think we’d need a bit more time. I had to push him to go home.

AARON

  • How did you prepare for the date?

Pep talk from the boys. They told me to have fun, not to say stupid things. Not really lots of prep, just the hype from them. I wasn't really that nervous, I just didn't want to be with a weirdo. I didn't really know how the system worked. I signed up. All the boys in the group chat went crazy. On the day of the date, my flatmate asked who wants to go to BrewCo at 7. I found out in the morning that it was her, which was nice because it made it easier.

  • What were you hoping for out of the date?

I was hoping she wouldn’t flirt with the bartender – but she did. A chill night, some good chat. For us to laugh about the fact that we already knew each other.

  • What was your first impression of Maddy?

I already knew who she was. She's really nice, nice smile, energetic. She was wearing the same clothes that she’d worn to dissection a few hours before.

  • What did you talk about?

So much stuff. Uni, nights out, how medics are the craziest people. The crazy places we’re from – she’s born in Holland, lived in Ireland and Italy and her dad is French-Canadian. She said some funny things. We laughed about how crazy clean freaks we are. The bartender came up to us 2 hours in – he told us it was the longest date ever. And gave us a free drink.

  • Did you go anywhere after BrewCo?

We popped down to the Union to go to Sandy’s bar and then I dropped her off at hers but then had to take some drunk mates home.

  • What moment did you feel the most connection?

It was at some point during our long chat. When they brought the second drink and we were laughing a lot, super loudly because it was something we had in common. I can’t even remember, something about stupid things we’ve done, and it was really funny.

  • What was the most awkward moment?

There really wasn’t any. Maybe that I had to go to the loo like five times during the date.

  • Rate the date out of 10

A right Jagerbomb – (9) nothing's perfect but it came very close

  • Would you see them again?

Yes, for sure, happy to see her again. It was really good fun.
