Plans Unveiled For New Computer Science Building

Eva Lewis

In November 2024, plans were unveiled by the University of St Andrews for a new modern Computer Science building, constructed to meet the growing interest in Computer Science.

The two-storey building is to be built on the North Haugh Campus and will contain a multitude of classrooms and laboratories. The School of Computer Science, which is currently spread over six locations in three separate buildings, will be situated within the new building.

The University first began developments for the building in 2021, spending approximately £20 million on an architect whose vision would incorporate the facility's net-zero carbon approach.

Early plans for the building were presented on 11 December at a public consultation in Rector’s Cafe, where questions about the project’s sustainability were put forward to those on the construction team. After careful consideration and contemplation over the environmental impact of the project, a planning application was put forward in early 2025.

Similarly to numerous facilities on campus, the new School of Computer Science aims to collaborate with researchers from other fields, focusing on finding solutions to climate change, researching dementia, and exploring a vast amount of socio-cultural and socio-scientific issues currently affecting the world today.

In order to maintain sustainability throughout construction, the building itself is expected to be constructed on the existing slope in North Haugh, aligning with the existing street pattern and framed around the Holm oak tree.

Expected to be completed within the next couple of years, a dedicated Computer Science building will create a dedicated environment for students to flourish, receive advice, and have a devoted place of learning.
