VS had introduced the first ever Streetwear x Hip-Hop Charity Fashion Show to the St Andrews social scene this year, impressing all with the calibre of the event. This, however, should not have come as a surprise considering the reputation the collective has worked relentlessly to achieve since their beginnings in 2018. Having been to my fair share of fashion shows, I was taken aback by how the team had created a show unlike the rest – VS 2020 | Urban has set a new standard.
On the evening of the 19th, all guests were taken a short distance outside of St Andrews to Falside Mill. This venue, as a newer addition to the rotation had perfectly catered to the crowds, considering it was a rather intimate event, whilst fitting with the theme – it was the perfect backdrop for their underground vibe. This, alongside the incredible music, impressive collections and unique creative direction, makes it a hard event to fault.
This really is a testament to the organisational efforts of the team, with only a few minor hiccups during the show which were handled with an unparalleled air of professionalism. Directors Sagar Sharma and Dominic Reynolds were happy to further detail the process for us;
When asked about the inspiration for the launch of VS 2020 | Urban, the directors’ dedication to their creative vision was evident;
“Our inspiration came from our raw passion for providing more hip hop in the town and adjoining creative mediums. We always knew from the events we have thrown in the past, people wanted what we were offering based on the feedback we got, so we wanted to open what we were doing up to a larger team, more guests and run a large scale event to leave a legacy in this town”
Further mentioning how they planned to provide us all with an experience that strayed from the structure of a typical fashion show;
“To differentiate, we took the focus away from being a serious event but put the emphasis on bringing a more intimate underground vibe where we focussed both on the music AND the fashion – shown by splitting the show into 5 sub-genres of hip-hop; Trap, Old School, Club, Runway, and Grime. Essentially focussing solely on maximizing people’s positive experiences at the event with a party-like feel”
With DJ Mazzei entertaining all with his performance through the show and after party, there was never a boring moment.
In terms of the fashion, with their initiative to introduce streetwear to the St Andrews fashion shows, the original take had presented us with collections valued at around £100,000 sourced from sponsors, in persons stores and private collectors. All of which had highlighted their creative direction with varying interpretations of streetwear with familiar brands like Supreme and Aven Helford – of which certain collections were modelled during the Vancouver Fashion Week. Look out for an email to be sent out to all attendees to browse all the brands presented!
With these reputable brands and remarkable choreography, the show left everyone excited for more and rushing back to St Andrews for the Afterparty held at The Vic. The night had quickly become everyone’s favourite!
As everyone is curious to see how they plan on continuing their legacy, and what they plan to do differently in upcoming years, the directors have expressed their continuing efforts to make VS Fashion Shows a permanent addition to our calendars;
“Next year, we simply iterate and make it better, keep improving people’s genuine enjoyment at our events and the fashion show itself. Always is and will be VS’s core value – make VS events the best we possibly can for the people attending through the creative mediums of hip-hop and streetwear”.
Considering the success of VS 2020 | Urban – driven by the efforts of the directors, the team, the models and everyone who attended – we are all excited to see what else VS has to offer. For those who wish to get involved with the collective’s work and be part of their upcoming events and infamous Vic nights, applications for next year open soon – make sure to keep up to date with these announcements on their socials!
Surpassing all expectations, VS have pulled off another amazing event, adding yet another notch to their belt.
