The On The Rocks Festival introduces an exciting new spin on a traditional launch party with their On the Pebbles events tomorrow, 15 November. The On the Pebbles events are essentially “a preview of what students and locals can expect to see at our main festival in April,” says committee member Meg Dyson. “It’s a day of various events all over town to promote the festival — from music to art to fashion, there is an event for everyone”.
The day will be jam-packed with art events all around town. Their theme this year is sustainability, which can be seen in the types of events being put on: all of the events following On the Rocks’ new sustainable ethos through various different mediums.
Below is tomorrow’s schedule of events as well as a little bit more information about each!
8:00-18:00 Art on the Pebbles
All day, this event is the perfect opportunity to see what your fellow St Andrews students have painted, drawn, designed, and more! Hosted at CombiniCafe, this is a free event to showcase local student artists to not only other students but to the public as well.
12:00-15:00 Clothes Upcycling
Want to know how to upcycle your clothes? Looking to refresh your wardrobe? This event is the one for you. And if that’s not what you’re looking for, bring your own clothes or buy an item from Sustainable Style! There are many different ways to stay fashionable, while being sustainable.
14:00-15:00 A Cappella Pop-up
On the Rocks is parterning with BELLS for this event. BELLS is the youngest a cappella group from St Andrews, known for its softly woven arrangements and carefully balanced blend. Covering an eclectic range of genres from oriental jazz to traditional and pop music, BELLS responds to its members’ unique colours and continually seeks to entwine new styles into soulful arrangements. They will be performing pop up shows around St Andrews to celebrate music and On The Pebbles, so stayed tuned into to where they’ll be!
15:00-17:00 Jannettas Music Cafe
On the Pebbles presents Jannettas music café, the perfect excuse to take a break from the books and relax. This free event will give students the chance listen to all of their favourite local student artists all while enjoying some lovely Jannettas gelato.
19:00-21:00 Jazz Cafe
This event at Sandy’s Bar will feature live jazz music presented by JazzWorks. This events provides another great way to relax and unwind, this time while sipping your favourite drink. Tickets are £3 and will be available at the door. The ticket entry also buys you a “Sandy’s Pass”, which gives you access to the Jazz Café and the stand-up comedy happening straight after!
20:00-22:00 Watercolour workshop
Come Next Door for a watercolour workshop with live music. Get ready to paint and learn techniques about watercolour painting! There will be great tunes and all the necessary tools to learn and love watercolour painting. The bar will be open with signature drinks created by On the Rocks in collaboration with Next Door, and tickets will be available for £3.
The Final event of the days is one brought to you in partnership with The St Andrews Comedy Society. From 9:30-11pm students will be performing their own stand-up comedy, and, as previously noted, this event is included with the £3 Sandy’s Pass.
Overall these events seem like a wonderfully creative way to promote and premiere the On the Rocks Festival in April. There is something for everyone, and the town will be taken over by art tomorrow which is incredibly exciting.
