After a brief hiatus last year, Hugh Halsey and other students have decided to reintroduce the Fine Wine & Cheese Society to the St Andrews event scene. To find out why they made this decision and where the committee plans to take the society this year, I sat down with Hugh to ask him a few questions.
The Saint: Why did you decide to reincarnate the Fine Wine & Cheese society?
Hugh Halsey: Our academic parents got us involved — it’s such a simple and fun concept, it seemed like a shame to leave it on the table. Wine and Cheese events are the only ones in town that offer unlimited alcohol for such a low ticket price — £15 for members, and £20 for non-members. We’ve always had a full refund policy in the case that we run out, but that’s highly unlikely — we budget for three bottles per person. It’s the best value for any night out in St Andrews for sure.
TS: What are you most excited about doing with FW&C this year?
HH: “Wine and Cheese events really offer us a creative blank-slate, I would say that’s the most exciting element. It’s a simple concept that can be applied to a lot of eclectic venues, and since our objective is just to break even, we have the freedom to max out the experience. Our favourite part from years past was the insane mix of people that Wine and Cheese attracted — everyone from first years, to postgrads (especially the Germans), to library dwellers, and people who go out on a nightly basis.
TS: What can students who join look forward to?
HH: A lot. First, there’s the obvious: rivers of wine and mountains of IJ Mellis cheese. Then there’s the people, the DJ blasting sing-along throwbacks, and the fact that you’re not going to rack up a bar tab. Pair that with our unconventional venues and you can’t lose.
TS: What’s your first event and how can people get involved?
HH: One of our craziest events five years ago was at Dervish, where one of our members fell through the front window after a little too much vino. We recreated that two years ago, strategically blocking the window with the DJ, and had an insane time. We’re now looking forward to throwing it back once more on Tuesday the 26th of November.
