Since 2016, Brexit has undoubtedly been one of the most discussed events regarding current politics.
Whatever one’s political opinions on the decision — taken in the referendum that ultimately determined the UK is to leave the European Union, whenever that may happen — the effect that Brexit will have on the lives of many students at the University is undeniable.
Taking into consideration the number of students at the University that come from all over Europe, the issue is of no small significance. For this reason, the University has launched an operation with the purpose of providing advice and answering questions of those who may be affected by the political uncertainty, especially as the deadline continues to draw nearer.
One can find the Help Desk on 79 North Street, where the ASC (Advice and Support Centre) is located and it is open Monday through Friday from 09:30 to 17:00.

The Help Desk attempts to offer updated and relevant information that derives from “expertise across our Schools and Units, as well as information from the Scottish and UK Governments,” as stated on the University website.
Paloma Paige, the Help Desk manager (and former Association President), told The Saint, “The Brexit Helpdesk is a commitment to supporting our international community, demonstrating that we will always be a welcoming and outward looking university,” further adding that it is the University’s mission to accommodate students’ concerns, so that their first priority can be their academic careers and studies.
Ms Paige states that an average of around ten students contact the Help Desk, usually to have an informal chat with her at the ASC, with the main issues of concern centering around the EU Settlement Scheme and Post Brexit Travel.
She also adds that in these cases, “For students without status issued under the EU Settlement Scheme, our advice is to carry your student card as proof of right to study, as well as a ‘Proof of Student Status’ letter (in printed format) when travelling.”
Ultimately, what Ms Paige is attempting to do is provide a “friendly face” to ease the bureaucratic processes that can often be highly confusing and intimidating to anyone that has to face it.
The Help Desk also welcomes feedback of any kind and is open to suggestions from the student body as they continuously seek to improve themselves with new ideas. This can all be sent either directly to the Help Desk or to the Communications Team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
